Brand mentions, backlinks and AI citations: what did you receive?

Your agency's monthly report says "4 mentions, 2 backlinks, 3 AI citations." Your CEO asks whether ChatGPT now recommends you. Answering means knowing what each number counts and how to check it.

These are different records, each checked its own way. A backlink is a link from another site to yours. A brand mention is your name on another site; a linked one is also a backlink, so count that page once. An AI citation is a source link shown in an AI answer; an AI mention is your name in the answer's text. An AI recommendation (our category at Shifter; no engine defines one) is an answer that presents you as an option for the question asked. Keep each type in its own column with its evidence, and never add them into one number.

Five records a report can mix up

Record What it is How to check it
Backlink Another site's link to your page Find the link in the page's HTML
Brand mention Your name in another site's text Open the page; save the sentence and date
AI citation A source link in an AI answer Open the cited page; check it supports the answer
AI mention Your name in an AI answer's text Save the full answer with date, engine and question
AI recommendation (our category) An answer presenting you as an option for the question asked; a name only in a source title, a link or a warning doesn't count Save the answer; have a person review the wording

  • Fictional expense-management company. As reported: 4 mentions, 2 backlinks, 3 AI citations, which added together looks like 9.
  • As records: 4 placements (brand mentions), 2 of them linked; the linked ones are the 2 backlinks, from two trade articles that name and link to the company.
  • 3 AI citations: two cite the help center in answers that don't name the company; one names it only in a warning that it's built for larger teams. That warning is 1 AI mention. 0 AI recommendations: no answer presents it as an option.
  • Blank record form: ID and type, date (UTC), where, question and country, URL, evidence, excerpt, checked by, and flags for mention, citation and recommendation.
  • An answer counts once, however often it names you; a failed or missing run stays missing, never scored as zero.

Brand mention vs backlink

Google's definition is narrow: "A backlink is a link on a page from another site that links to a page on your site." Its Links report lists them, but "isn't a comprehensive list of every link on your site." Search Console Help. An unlinked mention isn't one and won't appear there.

An Ahrefs study of how often 75,000 brands were named in Google's AI Overviews found: "Web mentions (0.664) correlate much more strongly than backlinks (0.218)." Ahrefs adds: "correlation ≠ causation." Ahrefs. It's one vendor's sample, on one AI feature. Google's AI guide says seeking inauthentic mentions "across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem." Google Search Central. Paid-for or free-product mentions may need a disclosure; see what makes a backlink relevant.

AI mention, AI citation and AI recommendation

The only engine-side citation definition we found is Bing's. Its AI Performance report counts citations as "the total number of citations that are displayed as sources in AI-generated answers during the selected time frame," and Bing adds: "This reflects how often pages are cited, not page importance, ranking, or placement." Bing Webmaster Blog.

Citations and mentions often split. A 2026 Semrush study with Kevin Indig logged 3,981 domain appearances from 115 prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini and two Google AI features. "Almost 62% (61.7%) were ghost citations": the domain was a source link, but the brand wasn't named. About 25% were named without a citation, and 13.2% were both. Semrush. This too is one vendor's sample, of domain appearances, not buyers' questions.

Tracking tools report "visibility." Peec AI's documentation says: "The Visibility Score measures the percentage of AI responses that mention your brand." Peec AI Docs. It's a mention rate, not a citation or recommendation rate.

A recommendation is the strictest record. An answer can cite your help page and still recommend a competitor.

What each engine's own report shows

Google. Search Console's Generative AI performance report counts impressions: "Impressions are how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search." The help page lists pages, countries, dates and devices as dimensions, and says the report reached all websites as of August 31, 2026. Search Console Help. It doesn't say whether an answer named your brand.

Microsoft. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report covers "Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations." Bing notes: "The data shown represents a sample of overall citation activity." Bing Webmaster Blog. That page doesn't name ChatGPT.

OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity. We found no publisher report in their documentation as of 29 September 2026.

Check every citation before you count it

OpenAI's help page says: "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect." It tells users: "Open a cited source to check that it supports the answer". OpenAI Help Center. Do the same before reporting a citation. How to check AI-assisted content for errors covers what studies found when checking AI citations.

A real example: our record format

Our AI-answer checks and placements use this format, one row per record:

Field What goes in it
ID and type One of the five types above
Date UTC time of the capture or check
Where Engine and mode, or the site and page
Question and country AI records: the question ID and where it was asked from
URL The cited page, or the page with the link or mention
Evidence The raw answer file or a page capture
Excerpt The exact sentence that names or links you
Flags Mention, citation and recommendation, each yes or no
Checked by Who verified it, and when

Four rules apply. An answer counts once, however often it names you. A linked mention is one placement, overlap shown. A failed or missing run stays missing, never scored as zero. Answers to provider-seeking questions are reported apart from educational answers, which don't need to name anyone. The AI-answer records in our September study cover ChatGPT and Perplexity. Ask for this form in your monthly report (what your SEO report should show).

Here are three real records from run 2 of our AI SDR study. All three are about one vendor, AiSDR, in ChatGPT answers from Spain on 25 September 2026:

Field Record 1 Record 2 Record 3
ID and type AI-1 · AI recommendation AI-2 · AI recommendation AI-3 · AI citation
Date 25 Sep 2026, 17:10 UTC 25 Sep 2026, 17:35 UTC 25 Sep 2026, 17:37 UTC
Where ChatGPT, Temporary Chat, web search on Same Same
Question and country "best AI SDR tools for B2B SaaS", Spain "Which AI SDR tools have the best reviews on G2?", Spain "Should a 10-person sales team use an AI SDR or hire a human SDR?", Spain
URL aisdr.com/pricing None for AiSDR. The only cited site is G2: a category page and five seller pages, none of them AiSDR's aisdr.com/pricing
Evidence Saved answer, run 2 of the study Same Same
Excerpt Table row 1, AiSDR, best fit: "Best overall for most SaaS teams testing AI outbound" "the G2 data makes Topo.io, Alta, AiSDR, and Salesforge especially worth comparing" "Roughly $250–$2,500+/mo for many current platforms; some enterprise products cost more." The pricing page is the source, and AiSDR isn't named
Flags Mention yes, citation yes, recommendation yes Mention yes, citation no, recommendation yes Mention no, citation yes, recommendation no
Checked by Shifter, 30 Sep 2026 Same Same

A report that counts every appearance would say "AiSDR: 3 AI citations." As records, it's 2 citations and 2 recommendations, and only Record 1 both names and cites it. Record 3 answers an educational question, so it's reported apart.

A fictional example: one report, rebuilt

A fictional expense-management company gets the report "4 mentions, 2 backlinks, 3 AI citations." As records, the 2 backlinks are 2 of the 4 mentions: two trade articles name the company and link to it. The total is 4 placements, not 6. Of the 3 AI citations, 2 cite the company's help center in answers that don't name it; 1 names it only in a warning that it's built for larger teams. None presents it as an option. The corrected report reads 4 placements (2 linked), 3 citations, 1 AI mention and 0 AI recommendations.

FAQ

Is a brand mention the same as a backlink?

No. Google defines a backlink as a link on another site's page pointing to a page on yours. A brand mention is your name in the text, linked or not. A linked mention counts as both, so record it once and flag the overlap.

If ChatGPT cites our site, is it recommending us?

Not necessarily. Bing says its citation count reflects how often pages are cited, not their importance, ranking or placement, and in Semrush's 2026 sample most cited domains weren't named in the answer. A recommendation (our own category) needs the answer to present you as an option for the question asked.

Do unlinked brand mentions help us appear in AI answers?

The evidence is correlational. In Ahrefs' study of Google's AI Overviews, web mentions correlated more strongly with brands being named than backlinks did, and Ahrefs notes correlation isn't causation. Google says chasing inauthentic mentions isn't as helpful as it might seem, so earn real mentions your buyers will read.
